Save the Flame!

Take back the Flame from Onii!
How fast can you run? How fast can you fly? Test your skills as young prodigy Omar as he uses the power of the Flame to take what's his from Onii!
Save the Flame is a side-scrolling endless runner I created during the MassDiGI Summer Innovation Program 2019 and released on both iOS and Android in September of that same year. The game is nearing 10,000 total downloads and has a review score of 4.8 across both storefronts! In 2020, I was able to work with Petricore Inc. and Waysun Games to create a port of Save the Flame! to Waysun’s new TV Boxes, which gave me a ton of experience learning how to optimize both code and assets. Given we had only 12 weeks to create a game from start to finish, a LOT was learned in that short time span and the additional work done with Petricore and Waysun made this small little game have a big takeaway experience-wise!

Responsibilities
Programming was my primary role here, though I did act as the lead designer for the project. That said, here’s what I did:
Created 3 separate white-boxes and ran local playtests to determine which concept we proceed with in the span of 3 weeks
Handled all design documentation for the game, including balancing sheets, core gameplay loop walkthroughs, and UI/UX wireframes
Developed internal tools to allow artists to seamlessly integrate their art, animations, and VFX into existing systems
Scripted parallax object system, supporting multiple dynamic layers at various sizes
Scripted custom camera controller to naturally follow and specified targets; includes zoom in/out and tracking/smoothing speed.
Reworked existing magnetizer powerup to have smoother and more performant collection logic, as well as develop a barrier powerup to shield the player from one collision.
Developed fireball obstacles that spawn off-screen, heading towards the player as well as a collapsing bridge. Also developed pop-up warning system in-game for both approaching fireball attacks and the collapsing floor mechanic.
Reworked the shop system to make it both more user-friendly and developer friendly, creating tools that allow easy shop additions and a clean UI that conveys all needed information.
Launched game on iOS/Android on September 23rd, 2019 with multiple version launches in subsequent months. Currently has almost 10,000+ downloads across iOS/Android.
Heavily optimized Save the Flame's codebase, art assets, rendering pipeline, and RAM usage for the WaySun TV box.
Developed a working build of Save the Flame on WaySun's TV box, complete with TV remote input to control the game. All runs at a smooth 60 FPS.
