Abysso Games

Seahorse Saga is a single-player turn-based RPG that is targeted toward anyone 10 and older, featuring mechanics such as timed action commands. With 2D vector sprites populating colorful 3D environments the story takes place undersea, following a young seahorse named Tyro, who is tasked to save Atlantis.

Originally started as a college project by a group of friends, this Paper Mario inspired game has taken a life of its own, accruing almost 1,000 followers across social media and remaining an active and thriving project many years later! I was on this project since its inception, but left in mid-2019 to pursue other work.

Responsibilities

I was a pure programmer on this project, unlike a good chunk of my past projects. Here’s what I did:

  • Created turn-based battle system

  • Developed in-house Entity Editor, a tool for designers to easily create, balance, and implement new enemies, player characters, and NPCs

  • Integrated Enemy Trait & Tag system, which allows certain moves to be more/less effective against certain enemies

    • This also includes buffs, debuffs, and status ailments

  • Scripted in-house ‘Zone Setter’ tool, used for creating sections within the same scene and linking sections to one another easily

  • Designed and implemented inventory system

  • Handled all UI programming (HUD, party screens, damage counters, etc)

  • Developed in-game pause menu, complete with sub-menu navigation
