Spellgroove
Starflight Studios
Dance, style, and spellcast your way through hordes of dazzling and dangerous baddies on your way towards fame and glory in this groovy discofest! There's one catch though, all your spells get randomized every 30 seconds!
My latest project under Starflight Studios, this originally started out as a quick 3 month project. Obviously, it’s grown into something much more due to the team’s love for the game and our drive to see a product through to completion! A lot of core system architecture principles I follow on all current projects stemmed from extensive research, setup, and execution through this project, so already this game has been invaluable to my progress as a programmer. Spellgroove is also the first product I ever managed to release on Steam, which still feels a little surreal to say, but it’s true - just check below!
Hi, I’m the thing you wanted to check down below - here’s the game on Steam!

Responsibilities
While most of my hours were spent programming on this project, I was also in charge of design and writing. Let’s break it down:
Developed the system architecture for the project using ScriptableObjects a la Ryan Hippie’s GDC Demonstration.
Crafted a modular spell system, allowing various categories of spells to be made with minimal effort and setup.
I used this modular system to allow for spell upgrades via story progression or from talking to NPCs.
Created a drink system, allowing you to order one drink before entering a match that boosts various stats like attack, defense, HP, etc.
Scripted a reactive dancefloor and crowd that light up and animate based on the player’s performance.
I also created a tool allowing me to convert a 10x6 pixel image into a dancefloor animation frame and sequence these frames together to create a properly animated dancefloor.
Utilized TwitchLib and integrated a fully functional streaming mode into the project, allowing a streamer to play against their chat (only works on Twitch.tv currently).
Worked on writing the dialogue for all NPCs in the game and fleshing out the lore of each NPC.
Created all VFX present in the game.
